Pressure & Unmet Expectations

Today we’re talking about pressure and unmet expectations πŸ’•

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the immense pressure and expectations placed on you by others… society… or better yet, yourself?

This constant need to place unwarranted pressure on ourselves can lead to us experiencing expectations not being met in our lives, which thus can lead to us feeling sad, depressed, or anxious (if left unchecked).

Let’s first explore the damages of placing too much pressure on ourselves.

Now the term pressure is best described as: continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it.

This is what can take place to our minds when we apply too much pressure on ourselves as a result of expectations placed on us by parents, society, friends, or even worse – ourselves.

I want you to consider a few of your mental choices lately…

Have you been placing too much pressure on yourself to get to a certain place by a certain time, to achieve a specific goal by a certain age, or to get out of a certain place by a definitive deadline?

Now… there’s nothing wrong with setting goals for yourself… I teach goal setting all the time through Brand Your Biz Academy and The Proverbs 31 Women’s Organization… but there’s a difference between goals and expectations.

Goals Lead… Expectations Determine

If you’ve set certain goals for yourself that you have a passion and a desire to meet – here’s the truth,

Even if you don’t reach your goals by the specific dates you set, you’re still farther along now than you were when you first started.

This mindset takes practice, rehearsal, and implementation to really take root and affect your overall quality of life.

We have to learn how to be okay with life’s adjustments.

The fact that you set a goal for yourself in the first place and are working toward achieving it should be celebrated!!

Unmet Expectations

Do you want to know what most of us do when we come across an unmet expectation in our lives?

Feel defeated, robbed, or unfulfilled.

Why do we place so much pressure on expectations anyway?

Who said that the only joy we can experience in this life has to come through us meeting a certain expectation?

We have to question these types of mindsets, and train our minds to think higher thoughts.

As a Christian, I believe that God leads my life, and it is because of my faith and trust in him that I have learned to be okay with life’s “unmet expectations.”

For one – just because I haven’t achieved or received something now doesn’t mean that I won’t achieve or receive what I’m waiting for in the future.

This perspective requires faith:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1

So… if you’ve been having a hard time accepting where your life is today, I want you to remember this – you’ve come a long way since you first began – and that is something worth celebrating! πŸŽ‰
